Phishing scam hits Dover area

DOVER — An e-mail scam claiming the Federal Bureau of Investigation is seeking money from citizens for a "Clearance Certificate" has raised some concern among area police.

Dover Police have received numerous calls and e-mails regarding the e-mail. City officials received the e-mail over the weekend and many staff in the school department said they had also received the same e-mail numerous times.

The e-mail says it is from the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission from Nigeria. It has what appears to be a seal from the FBI and the EFCC at the top of the file.

It's unfortunate that some people will fall for this and get scammed out of $350. Rule of thumb - if you ever get an email that claims to be the FBI or anything connected to Nigeria, it's a safe bet it's a scam. Just delete it and go on your merry way.

PS - add ducks to that list.....
